The Basics
Using Personas
Now, most people use the persona feature to write true facts about their OC. This is all well and good, but I prefer to use it for how the bot would perceive my character. This includes:
What my character looks like
I don’t include a specific height because the AI isn’t able to properly utilize that information. Instead I give a height relative to the average or, if the bot has a height, relative to the bot. I may also note relative to the average for my character’s sex versus the opposite sex (ie “she’s tall for a woman which puts her at roughly equivalent height to your average man.”)
How other people typically perceive my character
“People who don’t know OC very well assume she’s a scheming genius because she doesn’t talk much and has RBF. People who know her know that she’s only quiet because she’s daydreaming.”
Wild rumors, gossip, and conspiracy theories
“The tabloids have been reporting that (Merman Siren Pop Star OC) is part clownfish” and “Everyone in the kingdom believes that OC’s mother had an affair with the king and that OC is really the king’s daughter.”
I also sometimes add the following to my persona when RPing with public bots. This is because I’m a dweeb who never uses pinned messages. This could, of course, easily be a pinned message instead:
Background conflicts
“There’s currently a food shortage due to a terrible drought last summer.” or “Attacks on the border villages have been increasing lately.” or “[Generic CEO bot’s company] has been in the news lately due to rumors that the financial officer has been engaging in insider trading.”
Adding to the setting
Most bots don’t have too much going on with the setting, IME, even when the character has been given a lot of detail. Providing even a few cursory setting related details can help ensure the bot doesn’t default to the most generic descriptions possible.
If you’re RPing with a public bot then before you RP, give the bot a specific location in which the RP will take place. If you’re writing in a fictional world then give the bot some idea of what the inspiration is (ie “inspired by the folklore and culture of Victorian England” or “taking inspiration from scifi stories like _Evangelion_ and _Ultraman_”) or give a very broad overview of things like climate, population density, and cultural values (“high value on cooperation” or “rule by oligarchy”)
For Modern Bots
If the bot doesn’t mention a city/town then pick one that seems reasonable based on the bot or that you’re familiar with.
If the bot doesn’t mention a specific time of year then pick a season. Give a very brief overview of what the weather is like in the location you chose. Maybe jot down some specifics like “it’s spring break, so traffic is lighter than normal” or “the pollen count is very high and there’s a fine yellow dust covering everything” or “it’s so humid that as soon as someone steps outside they’ll be soaked with sweat”
